General News
We are in creative mode in Delta world! World religions projects, picture books, poetry and more! Ms. Lorrie had an “exciting” week and didn’t take any pictures for the newsletter. Forgive!
Reading/Writing Update
We started out our week going over our P&P from last week and having a lively discussion about the final sections we read from our novel Feathers. On Tuesday we took an end of unit quiz to check comprehension of overall plot points and themes in the novel – check your child’s P&P folder on Monday to see the results of this. We also had a few days to type and print our picture book pages and used some of our flex time to illustrate. The books look beautiful so far! Remember, finished illustrations are due on Monday. We closed out the week analyzing the Emily Dickinson poem “Hope is a Thing with Feathers” that our novel centered around. We copied down the poem and discussed imagery and learned some new vocabulary words to facilitate comprehension. We then broke down the poem line by line paraphrasing each stanza in our own words. This activity was a big hit and we used their own words to create a new class poem. We ran out of time to finish this activity but we’re looking forward to continuing on with it next week and writing our own poems about the themes in Feathers.
Math Update
Year 1 kids worked on finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and Year 2 students finished up our algebra practice, including balancing two-step equations with negative numbers! (This is way above grade levels and it’s so cool to see the Deltas pushing themselves to new learning.)
Theme Update
It was project week in theme as we worked in small groups to create artistic mobiles summarizing the five pillars of Islam. We also worked on our individual religious research “encyclopedias” until a printing glitch forced us to pause. (The printer will be back in service soon!) Small groups also finished up their animated retelling of important stories from Judaism. Next week, we’ll host two guest speakers and explore Christianity.
