“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” Even though it was a short week, our classroom has been full of energy! Students loved exploring proverbs and learning about Confucious. They had so much fun doing the dragon dance in the AHB parking lot and learning about its cultural meaning. Gaga ball has been a huge hit at recess, with students eagerly jumping into the pit for fast-paced fun. What a great week!
Math
All the Gammas explored problem solving about a real life scenario – planning a Lunar New Year party. This was a great review of multiplication, division, time and money. Gamma ones continued to practice 2 dimensional shapes and showed their learning in creative ways including creating a house of polygons. Coming up next week…Categories of quadrilaterals and 3-D figures. Gamma twos explored fractions greater than one – improper fractions and mixed numbers. Next week, they will add and subtract fractions with the same denominators and express answers in simplest form.
ELA
SEL was a huge focus this week as we read about Confucius, who was a Chinese teacher and philosopher who lived over 2,500 years ago. He is known for his ideas about kindness, respect, education, and strong moral character. After reading about his beliefs, Gammas applied them to their own lives and wrote about advice for living a good life that they have learned from parents, teachers, friends and elders. This led to some wonderful discussions. They finished up their Haiku poetry and began learning about proverbs and their meanings. We visited the library on Thursday and had an opportunity to check out “just right” books.
Theme
Tuesday was Lunar New Year, and Gammas enjoyed seeing the decorations they created around our classroom. We shared gifts of red envelopes containing (fake) money with other classrooms and ate oranges for prosperity in the new year. Our day ended with an amazing dragon dance in the parking lot. We had so much fun and learned a lot! They are in the process of forming their own “warriors” out of clay. We are excited to see all the amazing projects next week!
