What an amazing first week we had in Gamma: lots of smiles, laughter, and special moments. We are so proud of how eagerly they jumped into the new school year and can’t wait to see what amazing things are ahead!
Math
Both Gamma classes discussed the importance of math in our everyday lives, and collaborated to solve some fun thinking problems. They were introduced to our new problem solving stations and played some review games with classmates. We are really excited to dive into place value next week.
ELA
Gammas had a lot of laughs reviewing nouns, adjectives and verbs with Mad Libs! We also used ELA time getting to know each other. They completed triple venn diagrams in groups and used them to share information about themselves. It was awesome to see what so many of them had in common! We will have a spelling check-in on Monday, and start learning about writing complete sentences.
Reading
Plot was the focus this week. We learned that story plots have certain elements, including an introduction, rising actions, a climax, falling actions and a resolution. The students listened to stories and practiced identifying the elements of plot. They used a graphic organizer called “plot mountain” to keep this information organized.
Theme
The Gammas kicked off our Quarter 1 theme by discussing the definition of a hero—someone who shows courage, kindness, and puts others’ needs ahead of their own despite personal risk. We talked about how heroes don’t always wear capes; sometimes, they are everyday people who make a difference through their words, choices, and actions. We will continue exploring what it means to be a hero and how each of us has the power to make a positive impact!
SEL
We are proud of the ownership the Gammas took creating a set of agreements for our classroom community. The agreements will ensure that all Gammas have the opportunity each day to learn and have fun at school. On Thursday, we all pitched in to help clean up our outdoor learning space, and planted some new flowers in our garden.
