5th/6th: Week of August 17

General News

We had a great (we mean capital G-R-E-A-T!!!) first week! This class is already rocking and rolling. Remember your kiddo should get in the habit of bringing their book, P&P folder, and theme materials to and from school each and every day. Don’t forget to return your signed technology agreements and supplemental logs.

Reading/Writing Update

We took some extended time to go over P&P early in the week. We did several of the grammar spirals and reading response questions together as a whole group to scaffold into this new format for homework. We also did this to get a sense of what high quality work in Delta looks and feels like. We started reading our new novel, Esperzana Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. We ended the week learning a new literary term: foreshadowing. We talked about what this word means and looked within the second chapter of the book for examples of foreshadowing. We had fun illustrating these scenes and making predictions for the rest of the book!

Math Update

We jumped into Math this week by beginning our brand-new Math Survival Guides: notebooks that will gradually fill with the “how-tos,” examples, and helpful reminders students can turn to when their math brains inevitably say, Wait…how did we do this again? These are meant to be a yearlong lifeline, especially when tackling practice at home, so please help make sure Survival Guides travel to and from school each day!

Year 1 Deltas eased into the year with familiar territory, revisiting place value and stretching that knowledge into the thousandths place. Next stop: decimal operations! Year 2 Deltas ventured into the wild world of negative numbers, using homemade number lines and Bingo blotters to begin making sense of adding and subtracting integers. Both groups also kicked off a yearlong push toward fact fluency by making their own flashcards with some little interactive Cricut-cut creations. The goal is simple: practice those stubborn facts until they stop being stubborn! Stronger fact fluency frees up a whole lot of brainpower for the bigger math adventures ahead.

Theme Update

We kicked off Theme this week by beginning our grand tour of U.S. Geography! We started in the Northeast, getting acquainted with its states while also setting up some of the organizational systems that will (hopefully!) keep our geographical adventures from becoming geographical chaos. We wrapped up the week working in small groups to research individual states and turn their best discoveries into colorful state pennants packed with interesting facts, illustrations, and other bits of state-specific goodness. Our classroom is already starting to look a little more well-traveled!
