Reading/Writing Update
This week, we took everything we learned about the Dust Bowl and Great Depression and turned it into fiction! Before writing, we brainstormed setting, timing, weather, characters, conflict, and plot to help build believable stories about this challenging period in American history. We also started settling into the rhythm of ELA class where sometimes we’re taking in lots of new information and having big discussions, and other times the music is on, the room is quiet, and we get to simply settle into a creative flow. It was a fun week of taking what we’ve learned and turning it into something of our own!
Math Update
***A teeny half-sheet math check-in was sent home with your child Thursday. Take a peek to see which, if any, skills may need some extra refreshing!*** Year 1 Deltas continued flexing their estimation muscles, this time practicing rounding to a specific place all the way through the thousandths. We pulled out some hands-on manipulatives to quite literally put this skill in their hands and help make those tiny decimal places feel a little less mysterious. Year 2 Deltas jumped into multiplying and dividing integers. This can be a tricky gear shift since the rules are quite different from the addition and subtraction work we’ve been doing. We’re taking our time making sense of the patterns rather than simply memorizing a pile of rules.
Both groups also learned a new fact-practice game called Wild Pittie, inspired by the infamously spoiled Zipper Boi himself. 🐕 Deltas are encouraged to use this week’s P&P to dream up ideas for making the game even more fun. Who knows? Perhaps Wild Pittie 2.0 is lurking in the mind of a Delta as we speak. Finally, both groups took a tiny check-in to see how these new skills are settling in so far. Those came home in today’s P&P folder, so please take a peek!
Theme Update
This week in Theme, we discovered that those lines on a map didn’t just magically appear! Deltas explored state borders, both natural and political, and investigated why boundaries were drawn so differently across different regions of the country. Rivers, mountains, history, politics and a fair amount of human decision-making all had a hand in carving up our familiar map.
Kids then worked with their regional groups to create “Border Stories.” They sketched a map of their region, chose one particularly interesting boundary, and told the story of how that line came to be. It was a nice shift from simply knowing where states are to wondering why they look the way they do.We wrapped up the week with a station rotation offering a smorgasbord of state practice and enrichment, giving Deltas several different ways to strengthen their growing mental map of the USA.
