Gamma Newsletter 2026-2027
Gammas are settling into the school year and continuing to show us what an amazing group they are! This week, we had our first fire drill and practiced staying calm and responsible. We also took our first trip to the library, where students had the opportunity to learn how to check out “Just Right” books. HUGE thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness in helping us celebrate our teacher birthdays! We hope you make the most of the long weekend and we look forward to seeing you Tuesday at Parent Support Night.
Math
Gamma Ones continued building their place value skills by reading and writing large numbers in different ways. We also practiced comparing and ordering numbers and ended the week by learning how to round numbers to the nearest ten using a number line. Next week, we’ll move on to rounding to the nearest hundred and spend some time reviewing our place value and rounding skills.
Gamma Twos have enjoyed diving into place value problem-solving with mystery numbers! They also began rounding large numbers using both number lines and the “rounding rule.” Next week, we’ll head into addition, subtraction, including estimation as we continue building our math skills!
ELA
In ELA, we have been working through the writing process with our name paragraphs. We really focused on the importance of the editing and revising stage to improve our writing. This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to learn what makes a strong paragraph, including a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion sentence. Most Gammas are now in the publishing stage, and we are so excited to display their finished work next week!
Reading
In Reading, we learned about cause and effect and practiced identifying these relationships in life and the stories we read. We are also beginning to explore how characters react to and solve problems and how they can change throughout a story based on their experiences. Our Gammas are doing a great job in their book clubs and enjoying their books. The students were excited to visit the library and check out books. We will be visiting the library every other Thursday.
Theme
This week in Theme, we learned about two inspiring heroes: Harriet Tubman and Theodore Roosevelt. As we read, we are also learning about the features of informational text, including titles, subtitles, and paragraphs. We are practicing using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and identifying and highlighting the most important information in a text. We had a wonderful discussion about the difference between being famous and being a hero. They understand that heroes don’t have to be famous—many heroes are everyday people who make a difference through their actions and choices. We also added a new “Sponge” activity to our Theme time that connects to the idea of everyday heroes. Be sure to ask your Gamma about it!
SEL💛
This week in SEL, our focus was self-awareness. We talked about how being self-aware means understanding our emotions, strengths, areas for growth, and the choices we make. We discussed how knowing ourselves better can help us understand and care about others, make thoughtful choices, and continue to grow.
Our Gammas had the opportunity to reflect on their own self-awareness and think about how they see themselves. They considered their feelings, personal strengths, and areas where they can continue to grow. We loved seeing them take the time to think about what makes each of them unique!
