February is shaping up to be a busy and productive month in our classroom! Students are exploring the beauty of poetry and discovering real-world connections through geometry and fractions. We celebrated Friendship Day with a fun class party and appreciate our Gamma moms who helped make this happen. We look forward to our Chinese New Year activities next Tuesday.. It’s been a wonderful blend of academics and celebrations!
Math
Gamma ones have entered the realm of geometry, learning about two-dimensional shapes and their attributes. They’re learning lots of new geometry vocabulary, including polygon, angle, vertex, line segment, ray, etc… Gamma twos reviewed previously taught fraction skills (parts of whole, parts of a set, equivalent, comparing & number lines) this week and will embark on a journey of new concepts next week.
ELA
Five, seven, five – This is the pattern of syllables used in the three lines of a Haiku poem. Gammas are in the process of writing Haiku, a style of poetry that originated in Japan.. They are almost always about something in nature and do not rhyme. In reading, we read about the Chinese Zodiac and learned that it is a cycle of 12 animals, with each year represented by a different animal. People believe the animal of the year someone is born in can describe traits like being loyal, energetic or consistent. Each Gamma wrote an opinion paragraph that explained whether or not their animal was a good fit for them. The Chinese Zodiac is part of Chinese New Year, which celebrates new beginnings and good luck.
Theme
Chinese New Year is celebrated with colorful traditions like lanterns, firecrackers, special foods such as fish (a symbol of good luck), and lively dragon dances. These celebrations are meant to bring happiness, good fortune, and a fresh start for the new year. Gammas rotated through stations, creating these meaningful symbols for our Chinese New Year activity on Tuesday. It has been fun to watch them put so much effort and detail applying what they have learned.
