It was a great week in the Gamma room. Although the rain has been great, we are hoping for a sunny, hot day soon to test our solar ovens. We look forward to our field trip to Barton Springs on Tuesday! Thanks for filling out the chaperone/driver survey!
Math
Gamma twos began learning about ways to organize data including frequency tables, dot plots and stem & leaf plots. They enjoyed collecting data about the favorite animals of AHB students. Next week, they will organize their results using a stem and leaf plot. They will be able to create graphs to organize information and read/interpret graphs as well! Gamma ones wrapped up their measurement unit and have begun learning about frequency tables and dot plots as well.
ELA
We have kicked off our unit on the elements of drama! The students are excited to read several plays, create props and act them out. What makes this especially fun is that the scripts are all fractured fairy tales!
Their persuasive essays are underway, and their plan and introductory paragraph are complete. Next week, they will complete their drafts and begin editing. Book clubs are going great, and several groups are close to finishing their novels.
Theme
Water was our focus this week. The Gammas took part in a class demonstration that showed them just how little water on Earth is actually drinkable. Only about 3% of water on earth is freshwater. Most of that water is frozen in glaciers and ice caps, and much of it is groundwater. Less than 1% is found in lakes, rivers and streams – the main sources accessible and drinkable water. They learned about their “water footprint” and were amazed to learn just how much water it takes to get the things they use every day (hamburgers, blue jeans, showers, etc).
They ended the week with a fun science lab in which they used several materials to create a water filter and test it.
