2nd: Week of Feb 23

Math

This week in math we wrapped up our study of shapes and moved on to fractions – cookie fractions, sandwich fractions and pizza fractions! We learned about halves, thirds, fourths and eighths, as well as equal parts (aka fair shares). We practiced identifying unequal parts, partitioning shapes into equal parts and even wrote fractions. These kids are sure picking things up quickly!

ELA

In phonics this week we began our study of Bossy R! We learned that when “r” comes after a vowel it changes the sound of the vowel. This week we learned that “ar” and “ar_e” spelling patterns in words produce the sound /ar/ (like a pirate says), as in star or carve. We also learned “air” and “are” produce /air/ as in chair or glare. “Ear” and “eer” say /ear/, think: disappear and steer, and finally there’s “er” as in, herd. Our sight words were: large, part, air, perch, letter, number and learn.

Book clubs have finished for the quarter! This week we wrapped up Here’s Hank, Ralph S. Mouse and The Best in Second Grade. I’m so proud of all of these emerging readers and of the effort and dedication they pour into this part of our day.

On Thursday we split into 2 groups and rehearsed fractured fairytales: The Four Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. The kids can’t wait to perform next week!

In writing the Betas are working on final touches for their fairy tales! Front covers have been sharpied and bejeweled and final drafts are busily being penned.

Theme

The Beta Nobles created a map of their manor and the area of land that belongs to them including the various buildings, fields, forest and water source (for hunting and, well, water of course!). Small pods of kiddos are making all the parts important to a successful village- the peasant houses, mill, blacksmith, church, forest, fields, and of course a castle, etc.

On Wednesday the Betas were introduced to the lives and customs of medieval kings and queens. They LOVED this song:

On Thursday we held medieval game day! The Betas learned how to place 9 Men’s Morris and Fox & Geese – both are strategy games.
