This Week in Alpha

August 23-26, 2026

This Week in Alpha…

What a week! Our theme this quarter, Community, feels especially relevant during these early days of the year, as we learn how to take care of new responsibilities and get to know each other. Alphas know that a community is full of people. This week we talked about how each one of us is a unique individual, but when we come together, we have similar needs and goals like “…we came to AHB for friends,” “…we came to learn experiments,” “…we came to read chapter books.”

We also learned that when we all pitch in, it can make things easier to get done!

Alphas divide up Table Team jobs… if each table area gets cleaned up, almost the WHOLE ROOM gets cleaned up!

The table cleaners love going to work every day!

Sorting and organizing is a way of creating efficiencies in our lives that help our communities…

In Math, we talked about categories, purpose, and attributes… We took a good hard look at our shoes – they’re ALL shoes, but they’re ALL different! Then we sorted them in many different ways by different “rules.” Then we made Shoe Portraits to highlight their unique attributes.

Our Language Arts work included breaking words into separate sounds. and chunks (especially rhymes) We focused on initial sounds for our new green notebooks, and we wrote and drew a LOT of facts about ourselves for our “Box of ME!” (a little project to help illustrate how similar and unique the members are in our Alpha Community ).

We had a special guest stop by on Wednesday: Walter Tragert! He ran a wonderful music class for young children and parents for many years in Austin. Ms. Shari’s children were/are some of Mr. Walter’s greatest fans…by day, that is – because Walter Tragert is, by night, an incredible soul singer/songwriter and an important member of our vibrant music scene in Austin. Alphas had so much fun meeting him and would love for him to visit us again – so Ms. Shari is gonna see if we can make it happen! YAY!!! We are so lucky to live in such a musical city!
