Math
This week in math we dove into Graphs & Data! We made a t-chart, several tally charts and bar graphs and we learned about surveys. We surveyed each other on afterschool activities and then each Beta got to create their own survey question to explore. The creativity of these kids is astounding.
ELA
In phonics this week we met the diphthong /oy/. The spelling patterns for /oy/ are: oi (coin), and oy (toy). Our sight words were: great and means. Our vocabulary words were loyal, hoist, spoil and voyage.
All three book clubs have started new novels! We’re reading Eerie Elementary, Ready Freddy: Yikes Bikes! and The Littles.
Theme
Our short insect stories are complete! We began reading (and writing!) some poetry this week. Next week we will explore poems for two voices and partner up to write some of our own!
This week we learned about ladybugs and pill bugs. We performed many experiments on roly polies, aka potato bugs, aka woodlice! (No roly polies were injured!) And like all good scientists, we jotted down our discoveries. We tested to see what they preferred- water, salt, sugar or vinegar. We placed a small amount of each, diluted, onto a piece of coffee filter and watched where the little guys gravitated toward. Most seemed to enjoy the water and sugar water!
And we are FINALLY utilizing all the newspapers brought in and are in the throes of making our giant insects! This week we added a second layer of paper mache and if all dries well 🤞- next week we’ll be painting them!
