5th/6th: Week of Feb 2

General News

Friendship Day is coming up next week! See this list for class names. Remember, if you choose to bring in any Valentine cards you must bring one in for everyone in the class. We’ll do the traditional paper bag decorating and card exchange on Thursday of next week and decorate kindness rocks to place around the school.

Whit (and his mom) are organizing a before-school coffee club! They plan to meet at Violent Crown Coffee some days before school and then the kiddos will walk to school together. Look for an email coming from Emily soon with more information if your kiddo is interested in a morning meet up.

Reading/Writing

This week we got down to the nitty gritty of creating our picture books! We started out by spending some time independently reading and analyzing various different picture books for plot, characters, language and illustrations. We looked for inspiration and to get a sense of what is important to have in a great picture book. We then moved on to mapping out our own picture book story ideas with characters, setting, and plot mountains. We have a variety of religions being represented in their writing including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Taoism, and more!

Math

Math was tons of fun this week with both groups pushing above-level for some fun with function tables. Year 1 kids explored additive and multiplicative patterns and then graphed them on large posters. They came out beautifully! Some groups even opted for two-step equations. Year 2 kids continued on introduction to balancing equations but we took it up a notch by including negative numbers and working with equations that required kids to combine like terms. Both groups finished the week with a hands-on “riddle race” themed after taking Zipper (Ms. Lorrie’s naughty dog) on a date to some food trailers. It was a challenging activity and they nailed it!

Theme

This week we began our studies of Judaism. Sally (Daisy’s mom) has lined up a 91 year-old guest speaker to talk to the Deltas about Orthodox Judaism and we can’t wait for another speaker. Kids explored different Jewish parables and had them come to life via animation (with all homemade art for the characters and scene backgrounds) Not all groups got to finish creating, but we will build in some crafting time in two weeks so that everyone can cross the proverbial finish line. Next week, we begin our study of Islam. Natasya (Xavier’s mom) is coming as a guest speaker and we can think of no better way to launch this new unit of study! (Thank you!) We are confirmed for four of the five field trip locations and are keeping our fingers crossed we can get the Hindu temple scheduled. Keep your fingers crossed! Thanks again to the parent volunteers/chaperones.
