5th/6th: Week of Jan 26

General News

We can’t believe it’s the weekend again already! We got a lot of great learning done in our two days together. 🙂 Our field trip planning for March 3rd and 4th is still in the works, but we have secured brave volunteers for chaperoning! (Thank you!) We’ll keep you posted as plans firm up.

Reading/Writing Update

We made the most of our weird, short week! We had a wonderful discussion about our new novel, Feathers! Kiddos seem to be really enjoying this book and using it to dig into the deeper “why” behind why people participate in religion. We read a new picture book to add to our list! This book was about a Jewish and Islamic boy meeting to share friendship and food on Ramadan and Rosh Hashanah, respectively. We found examples of religious clothing, food, and holidays in these books and also discovered they have some similarities – just like the boys in the story.

Math Update

Math kids were on FIRE in both classes! We had a few short days but accomplished a LOT! Year 1 kids learned how to decipher number patterns in input/output tables so they could start graphing basic linear functions. They ATE it up! It was really awesome to witness kids loving this somewhat-abstract and sometimes-confusing-at-first skill. Year 2 kids took a deep-dive into algebraic equations and expressions. We practiced terminology and then started using the distributive property to combine like terms. I printed them some above-level work and they chomped away on it like CANDY! It was an excellent math week.

Theme Update

We wrapped up Buddhism in them this week. (Sniff, sniff! But we won’t be sad for long as our introduction to Judaism will unroll on Monday.) Kids learned about their Seven Symbols P&P project and seem excited to get going with it. We’ve been sure to show “example” finished projects (we’re staying one week ahead of the kids to make this possible!) so they can better “see” a concrete example of the end-goal. We *think* this is helping kids feel less overwhelmed by directions/instructions because they are doing AMAZING! Everyone is doing their work (and with effort) and we are just super-duper proud of their growth. At week’s end (aka day 2 of the week! haha!) we gave the Deltas a choice: start working on P&P research, finish up projects that needed loose ends tied, or create a mini-animation of the life of Siddhartha. With just one tiny class period, we didn’t expect masterpieces but let’s just say: The animated stories are FANTASTIC! We can’t wait for you to see them come semester’s end.

(Few photos were taken this week! Blame it on the ice….or the rain, if you are a Milli Vanilli fan 😁)
