The Betas are working so extremely hard in math! This week we cemented our addition with regrouping skills and introduced subtraction with regrouping!! We even applied our addition strategies to solve problems with 3 or 4 double digit addends! Though our double digit addition/subtraction math unit will formally end next week, these are skills we’ll continue honing all year in order to achieve mastery and automaticity.
Book Club is rolling right along! Our clubs are into their second books of the quarter. The Fly Guy girls will soon be beginning their third (and final) book from the Fly Guy series. Our Ready Freddy group chose to continue the series with Yikes, Bikes! And our final group is off adventuring with Flat Stanley.
In phonics this week we practiced dropping the “e” on words that end with “e” when adding “-ing.” They picked it up fast AND everybody scored 100% on a vocabulary quiz featuring: heal, heel and flee. Our sight words this week were: year, anything, any, city, and only. To celebrate our achievements, we took Thursday off of phonics to play Mad Libs – winter edition!
In writing we’re still working tirelessly on our biographies :) This week we wrote our conclusions by telling our readers why our inventors & their inventions are important. Several Betas have finished their rough drafts (!) – next week we will begin revising, editing, and writing our final drafts.
Our cardboard automata are almost all complete! We have found that after assembly most are requiring further tinkering to get their gears to function just right. Next week will be our last week for tinkering and we also plan to hold a mini carnival for our peeps! The Betas have been hard at work all week creating rides and more for them using simple machines.
There have been whispers around the Beta room of possible Borrowers… Inspired by our latest read-aloud, some students have been leaving notes for them in small places, in case our room is home to any. Whenever an item is misplaced, as happens regularly, you can bet who’s accused first…
