This week in Math we wrapped up our current unit by devoting a day to solving story problems with missing addends. We took our unit test on Tuesday and celebrated Wednesday with a game day. On Thursday we took our pre-test for the next unit, which delves deeper into addition and subtraction by introducing regrouping and working with larger numbers.
We finally started Book Club this week!! The Betas are rocking it, per usual. They seem to be really enjoying their books, whether they’re learning about wolves with our first-ever nonfiction book for book club, reading about Tooth Trouble while actually experiencing some of their own, or braving an insect as a main character. They’re getting the hang of pausing their reading periodically to chip away at the questions in their reader response journals. I’ve said it before, but I could not be any prouder of this batch of Betas.
In phonics this week we reviewed spellings for long /a/. We watched Silent E is a Ninja (a favorite from Alpha) and practiced reading words with ai and ay. We read stories, answered comprehension questions and played a partner game in which we earned tallies by correctly spelling words with long a. Our sight words were: today, page and change.
This week in writing we chose our inventors! Each Beta received a book about their inventor and immediately dove into it, searching for facts. As we collected facts on post-its we realized we had some unanswered questions, so we wrote them down to be researched and answered.
By the end of the week each student was challenged to collect 10 facts, which we will organize into categories that will be used to create our Table of Contents. It’s amazing to see the Betas so excited about the inventor that they have chosen AND they worked so hard this week collecting facts! All while enjoying the process like fervent investigators!
Now that we have explored all 6 simple machines, we did a quick review before we move to the more complex compound machines! We learned about Rube Goldberg and his cartoons and we watched many crazy Rube Goldberg style videos to get us warmed up for our home project as well as our upcoming projects in school!
The crew are in the planning stages of creating their own simplified cardboard automaton. Next week we will create!
