Ahoy, crew! This week we officially launched our Viking longships and rowed into new learning adventures. Our fearless Gammas are absolutely rocking it. They’ve shown some serious leadership, keeping their learning space shipshape and staying on top of their tasks. We can’t wait to see where our Viking journey takes us next week. Full speed ahead!
Math
This week’s focus was all about solving word problems involving addition and subtraction of larger numbers. We practiced a strategy called UPSC (Understand, Plan, Solve, Check) to help students make sense of one and two step story problems. We also reviewed the algorithm for addition and subtraction and played a game that reinforced subtraction across zeros.
ELA
The students continued drafting their personal narratives and started using the “CUPS/ARMS” strategy to edit and revise their stories. They learned about the importance of using smooth transitions and vivid verbs to give their stories the WOW factor. We continued to read about the Viking realms of Yggdrasil and how this giant tree symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things in the Norse universe.
Theme
This week we learned a lot about Viking shields. We focused on how they were constructed and why they were significant-not just for warfare. They held cultural significance within Viking society. Gammas designed their own unique blueprint for a Viking shield and chose symbols and colors based on their meaning.
