Humanities
The short week presented Humanities students with the opportunity to dive into their new novel The Book Thief, which chronicles the life of Liesel, a young woman facing the devastation of World War II in Nazi Germany. Students discussed their initial impressions of the novel through their study guides, and made comparisons to historical events. One of the stories was about Jesse Owens, who figures prominently in the first section of the book. Students learned through historical reels about owens and how his achievements were connected to the pre-war era.
Theme
Theme students finished their analysis and evaluation of World War I this week, as we took an initial look at the Treaty of Versailles. Two mini-projects finished the era, as students again applied their growing expertise of writing poetry by creating Diamante poems about their experiences in the war. They will also create commemorative coins to mark their symbols that we remember the war by.
World War II will commence next week, but students again looked at and checked the progress of their “Victory Garden”. In the face of the ice storm, the produce is really taking off, as students watered and tilled the soil, recording the status of growth.
