ELA Update

This week we were still deep into production mode with our films! These were a total blast to make and the chance to draw, act, and create together could not have been more well-timed! We were almost entirely wrapped up – with just a few finishing touches needed – by Thursday so we got to have an ELA “free day” with reading, writing, and vocabulary exploration. Some kiddos typed up fiction stories, some devoured graphic novels, some read the dictionary and made lists of vocabulary words (yes – for fun!). We’ll be having a film premiere next week on Shipe Park day where we watch them all together, complete with a red carpet and photo shoot for the filmmakers! Next week we’ll start learning about some of the particulars of poetry and we will work on reading and writing poetry through the end of the year!

Math Update

It was all about measurement in math this week! (Namely, metric and standard conversions.) The Gammas did a fantastic job. In Year 1, we made measurement art posters to help students internalize the ‘gist’ of specific measurements (length, capacity, mass/weight) The posters came out very creative and cute! Year 2 kiddos applied their decimal hopping skills to learn how to convert measurements in the metric system. (We talked about how Ms. Lorrie’s elementary school teachers PINKY PROMISED that the customary measurement system was going away FOREVER!) Both groups played some games to practice conversions and also learned how to play a really fun math game called Prime Climb (You can find it at Target and game stores–You might want to give it a try! It’s a fan favorite!)

Theme Update

We started out this week working through an informative google slideshow about the digestive system. We learned about nutrition and how the digestive system functions. This was a comprehensive slideshow and took two class periods, but by the end Gammas were ready for our very cool (or gross, depending on who you ask!) lab recreating the process of digestion from start… to finish. We used a variety of materials to mimic the process of digestion. Plastic bags were the mouth and stomach, vinegar, cocoa powder, and margarine were the stomach acids, and the leg of a panty hose mimiced the intenstines. The final step of expelling waste through the rectum was done with a paper cup plunger with a hole at the bottom. We wrapped up the week with some note taking and another task card scavenger hunt to check for understanding!
