Spring was in the air this week in the Gamma room, and April Fool’s Day was a lot of fun. Both Gamma math groups enjoyed outdoor learning this week in math, and our class garden is thriving! This quarter is off to a great start.
Math
Gamma ones figured out elapsed time using clocks and a number line strategy. They also started learning about perimeter. They applied it by measuring the perimeter of some of our playground areas in the AHB parking lot. Gamma twos used their knowledge of lines and angles to design a robot with certain geometrical attributes. They learned how to find the measurement of angles using equally divided circles and protractors.
ELA
In reading, our focus was interactions between major and minor characters. They did a great job citing textual evidence to support their conclusions about character relationships. In writing, we learned the difference between simple and compound sentences and practiced creating compound sentences by choosing the appropriate conjunctions. Book clubs are also zooming right along.
Theme
Air was our focus this week as we learned about the layers of Earth’s atmosphere. We discussed what fossil fuels are and how burning them has negative impacts on our environment such as smog and acid rain. The Gammas completed a lab in their “theme teams” Thursday that simulated the effects of acid rain on statues.
