What a week! In math we are deep into our unit on Place Value. We’ve been representing and comparing numbers in the thousands! We’re also pushing our skip counting skills to their limits and extending them. Along the way we’ve been learning new math games and enjoying playing them with friends.
In phonics this week we learned several letter combinations that create sounds that are GLUED together. That means we count them as 1 sound (ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk). We practiced building words, sounding out and spelling words with glued sounds, played a couple new games and read a couple of short stories featuring glued sounds. Then we practiced finding them and answered comprehension questions about the stories. Our sight words this week were could, would and should.

We’re working to complete our personal narratives. Once finished, we will revise and edit them before we enter the publishing phase. Our read aloud with several examples of strong verbs was Come On, Rain.
This week was all about mummies! We learned the process of making a mummy and created “Mummy Wheels” which summarized and illustrated each step. The one entailing a hook be inserted into the nose to retrieve the brain, bit by bit, was a favorite. Everyone learned that natron is salt, and that it’s an excellent agent to use to dry things out and preserve them.
Halfway through the week we turned our focus to canopic jars. Four organs were put into these jars to embalm them: liver, stomach, intestines and lungs. We crafted our own canopic jars (shout out to Jill for helping us out with all of the jars!!) using clay. The lid of the jar was adorned with the head of one of Horus’ sons:
- Hapy, with a baboon head, guarded the jar with the lungs.
- Duamutef, with a jackal head, guarded the jar with the stomach.
- Qebehsenuef, with a falcon head, guarded the jar with the intestines.
- Imsety, with a human head, guarded the jar with the liver.
