It’s been a wild week back in Beta!!
Math
This week in math we reviewed pennies, nickels and dimes. The Betas carefully examined the heads and tails sides of each coin and did a lot of skip counting by 5s! By the end of the week we were counting mixed coins and playing store. On Thursday we held a game day!
ELA
In phonics this week we continued our study of Bossy R, focusing on how it affects the vowel o! The spelling patterns we learned this week were: or, ore, and oar. The best part is that they all say /or/! Our sight words were: work, world, and door.
New quarter, new book clubs! Now we’re reading Junie B. Jones: and a Little Monkey Business, Eerie Elementary, Yazmin the Explorer, and soon – Doug the Pug!
We’re easing into our writing project this quarter by reviewing the basics and by learning about a new genre! Some Betas are thrilled to begin working on their new science fiction stories, others are less into Sci-Fi, but we will all be writing a fictional story starring a minibeast of our choosing.
Theme
Our budding entomologists dove right into our new theme! We began by learning the subtle differences between “bugs,” insects, and minibeasts. Then we turned our focus to the fundamentals of insects. Insects are small, invertebrate animals with 6 legs, three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), an exoskeleton, antennae, compound eyes and sometimes, wings.
Finally, on Thursday we met a bunch of crickets!! After reading about them and learning some important new vocabulary, our Beta scientists were each given their own live cricket specimen to observe. During our up close investigation we were able to locate the body parts we’d just learned about(!) AND we were able to discover whether our cricket was male or female! Some promptly received names. Then we released the happy critters into our school garden.
