Wow! What a crazy week! We missed our Gammas during the winter storm and were so happy to see them on Wednesday. Even though we had a two day school week, we were able to accomplish quite a bit.
Math
Gamma 1’s reviewed how to compare fractions with different denominators and took a closer look at finding and creating equivalent fractions. Gamma 2’s reviewed adding and subtracting decimals and applied the skills to a real life situation – shopping at a toy store. We also have begun estimating/rounding with decimals and will continue this next week.
ELA
We learned that a paragraph is a group of related sentences about one topic. The class learned the “hamburger” method for creating a paragraph where they start with a topic sentence, follow it with interesting details related to the topic, and end with a concluding sentence. In class, we wrote a paragraph about ice cream, and included it in the P&P. Hopefully, this will help with writing the research for their projects. We read some limericks and learned about their structure – 5 lines, a set number of syllables for each line, and something silly. We will continue this next week, and students will be writing their own limericks. Last but not least, we squeezed in some cursive practice!
Theme
In the theme, groups presented the information they learned about ancient Mongolia last week. This week, we learned that the Mongolian people were nomadic, moving from place to place to feed their families and their animals. They lived in yurts that could be packed up and moved easily. They built fires inside their homes (much like the Vikings) which were sacred to them. We ended the week by beginning construction of our own yurts!
