2nd: Week of Jan 5

Math

Q3 math kicked off with a pre-test (no stress!) for our next unit on time and measurement. After our first week back we’ve mastered telling time to “o’clock” and :30, next week we’ll work on solidifying: quarter past, quarter till, and beyond!

ELA

Book Clubs are charging ahead at full speed. All three groups will be starting a new novel within the next couple of weeks. I’m particularly impressed with the level of quality that I’m seeing in the Beta’s journals.

In phonics this week we studied spellings of the long o sound: o, o_e, oa, oe and ow (which can be a little tricky because sometimes it says /ow/). Our sight words were: also, know, follow and show.

In writing we were formally introduced to letter writing! We read Dear Mr. Blueberry and got a new journal to hold our Thursday letters. First thing Thursday morning we put our new practice into place – I can’t wait to read all of the Beta’s letters & write back.

We also created journals to use for our journey through the medieval times, where we will put ourselves in other people’s shoes along the social ladder, starting at the bottom as peasants. We plan to write about our “experiences” in the weeks ahead. We made our journal cover by crumpling brown paper until it was just the perfect amount of old!

Theme

In theme this week, we looked over a list of medieval surnames. Did you know many surnames were given for the profession that the people held? Or for where they lived? We picked our surname to add to our journal covers. And then it was peep time! The queen of Beta Manor has given simple “wattle and daub” houses to her peasants in return for their servitude. The peasant families were allowed to quickly set up their home, making 1 table, stools for each member and 1 chest for their possessions. There was no time to to dilly-dally, for they needed to begin working in the fields the next morning.

Medieval peasants had it really rough. Waking before dawn, removing rocks and trees from the fields, plowing the fields, planting the crops, harvesting, and giving much of the food to the lords or king, keeping very little for themselves. Their houses were small, dark, dirty and cold in the winter and hot in the summer. They worked all the time. On Thursday, our Peeps planted the fields, knowing they will need to give the majority of the food grown to the queen of Beta Manor. Life is hard.
