We are missing parent survey responses for HALF of the class! Please be sure to fill out this snappy form so we can better understand your conference needs! (Our conference scheduling is a little more complex this year so we appreciate your feedback so we can plan.) Here is the link to the conference sigh-up sheet if you need to check/change/add your time!
Reading/Writing Update
This week we continued to make progress with typing up our 5 paragraph essays. This project was intense! The looks of horror at the beginning when we said we would be writing 5 paragraph essays slowly faded into swells of pride as we get closer to having them finished. This is the growth area and stretching of the comfort zone we’re always talking about! Writing the introduction and conclusion is always the trickiest part, but plugging information into this writing style is almost mathematical and can be satisfying once you get into a good flow! We have learned a ton in this process, not just about writing essays, but also about ancient Korean pottery, systems of government, religion, traditions, and daily life! We took a break from writing midweek to make pinch pots with a special guest – local potter (and friend of Ms. Ansley) Chris came to do a demo – and though we didn’t get the full experience of making traditional prunus vases on a pottery wheel like Tree-ear and Min do in the book, we did get to put our hands on some real clay and create something functional and beautiful! After fall break we will be able to get these fired and glazed on celadon!
Math Update
We are project-ing it UP in math class this week. Year 1 kids are crunching numbers to create a new room for the school and Year 2 kids are inventing recipes and then applying their mixed numbers multiplication and division skills to double, half, etc. We are getting in a great rhythm! Both projects are due next Thursday so it may be that kids will need to take projects home to tie up any unfinished loose ends. This is their first attempt at juggling projects in different content areas so we are doing a lot of reminding, structuring and encouraging to ensure that next week’s pre-break week can be light and fun! (And stress free!) We also took our end-of-quarter check-ins in both classes and the results are looking good. You’ll find detailed information about your child’s performance on the AR reports which we be sent on Sunday, October 19th.
Theme Update
Projects are the name of the game in theme class, as well. We are working on working on teams to explore various countries in the group’s randomly assigned continent. Each Delta is working on researching a self-selected country and they will use that information to create a one-page travel poster. (All details/requirements are included in the packets provided! We sent you links via email yesterday if you want to review.) We will continue working in class next week and will plan to have a celebratory Continental Cultural Fair next Wednesday afternoon! Kids will get to showcase their learning and we’ll end the quarter with a nice celebration before heading off to fall break.
