Math:
The Meatballs finished up their poster projects on Monday and completed a puzzle to practice proportions. Tuesday we had a lesson on unit rates. Wednesday we practiced more proportions with a train puzzle and a scavenger hunt. Thursday, for Halloween, we created Halloween scenes that needed to include various geometric shapes and definitions.
The 8th grade students practiced finding slopes from graphs and given two points on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday they had a lesson on graphing linear equations in slope-intercept form. On Thursday they graphed linear equations that made the shape of a spider web!
The Algebra students solved a puzzle to practice identifying the difference between direct and inverse variation on Monday. Tuesday they had an application problem lesson. Wednesday they sorted equations into linear, direct, and inverse variation equations. Thursday they reviewed graphing linear equations in 3 forms by “killing zombies” on a coordinate plane.
Humanities:
Story stories dominated this week’s work in Humanities classes. We started the week off by checking progress with the weekly reading and language requirements, making sure that students understood the workflow. We read a series of shorts stories, including The First Seven Years, A Whole Nation and A People, and Two Kinds. Each story related to how parents relate to their children across generations and focused on student understanding of a story’s structure and character.
Students also spent time this week revising their Literary Essay from the first quarter on the novel Uprising. The progress and development of these essays will be on display at PoP.
Theme:
Busy week for Theme this week as students jumped into our new topic of Cell Biology. We began with basic information and review of the structures of both plant and animal cells. Looking at the functions of the cells’ organelles, students compared how every living thing on the planet is reflected in their cellular makeup. We also pulled the microscopes out to view cells in their actual state. This trend will continue next week with a fun lab to investigate DNA.
Students also took a big step forward with the Q2 Projects to build an Information Essay on specialized cells. The class reviewed the process of taking notes and organizing information using different colored notecards (Parents may want to ask about this system). They also looked into the process of outlining their information to build their rough drafts. We will continue to use Thursdays as Project check-in days throughout the semester. Project reports and visual representations presentations will be due during PoP week.

At top, students celebrate two birthdays with a dance party during Flex time. Above, students use Rock, Paper, Scissors to narrow down choices for quarter projects.

At top, colder weather creeped into outdoor play this week but did not dampen students fun. Above, Meatball students took on their assignment to create photo booth decorations for the Halloween carnival.

The first annual AHB Halloween carnival was a hit with students, staff, and parents!

The Halloween carnival allowed Upper school students to lead our elementary students through a morning of fun and festivities.
