Quarter 3 is well underway and the Gammas are enjoying the beautiful weather at recess. We are looking forward to our many un-birthday and birthday celebrations that are coming up. Our class had a great start to cursive handwriting this week, and they are really getting it! Looking ahead, we will be entering the world of poetry. Gamma poets will be reading different types of poems and writing some of their own. Enjoy your four day weekend and see you Tuesday!
Math
Gamma 1’s composed and decomposed fractions this week looking at parts of a whole and fractional parts of sets. They were excited to use Skittles for a fun learning activity on Monday. We learned that the larger the denominator is, then the smaller the piece is. Next week we will use what we’ve learned to compare fractions and discover equivalent fractions. Gamma 2’s dove a little deeper into decimals by plotting decimals on a number line and learning to compare decimals to the hundredths. (Example: 7/10 = 70/100 = o.7 = 0.70 and 0.08 < 0.1)
ELA
Both Gamma classes solidified our figurative language skills, by creating posters that showed the definitions and examples! Gamma 2’s went on a scavenger hunt for examples of figurative language in books. Both classes started learning about the elements of poetry and look forward to continuing this throughout the quarter.
Theme
We focused on the Silk Road this week, and how the trade route enriched the lives of people. The ancient network facilitated the exchange of goods like silk, spices and gold as well as ideas like religion and technology. More than just one path, it was a web of land and sea routes between China, Asia, Africa and Europe. Gammas worked in groups to reconstruct the route map and add their own details and creative touches. It was so much fun!
