So many exciting things happened in our class this week. It was nice to have a full week of school with our sweet Gammas. We have been enjoying the nice weather at recess and are looking forward to a fun Friendship Day celebration next week.
Math
Gamma 1’s wrapped up our study of fractions. We did a fun activity dividing paper cookies that showed us how fractions relate to division. They really seemed to get it and did well on the fraction check-in. Gamma 2’s reviewed all things decimal with a Starbucks menu assignment and knocked the socks off of our decimal check-in. Both Gamma classes learned how to play “Par 55”, a strategic game of analyzing shapes according to their unique attributes. What a great kick-off to our upcoming geometry unit.
ELA
This week was all about limericks! We focused on rhyming patterns and rhythm specific to limericks. Gammas learned that limericks always have 5 lines and follow a rhyme scheme of AABBA. They are almost always funny and have a unique rhythm due to the number of syllables in each line. It was challenging, but once they got the hang of it, they really went to town writing their own limericks. We read about mandalas and learned that they are sacred geometric designs that symbolize the interconnectedness of all things. We are in the process of creating our own mandalas!
Theme
The finishing touches were added to our tiny “gers” (yurts) this week. They look amazing! The Gammas participated in a reading and writing “arena” (the gym) related to Emperor Qin and his terra cotta army. The students read carefully selected excerpts about Qin and responded with thoughtful responses related to the text. Finally, they had a blast narrowing down and choosing names for our own terra cotta warriors. After much discussion and a lot of voting, meet “Bob” and “Qin”.
