YAY Division I is going to the tournament this weekend!  Not every Math Pentathlete will be able to go, but every member of Math Pentathlon practiced good gamesmanship and showed up each week to learn and have fun learning new strategies and games. We LOVE Math Pentathlon! Where in the World?! This week was full of fabulous guest speakers who educated Alpha students on our bordering countries – Mexico and Canada! Spring was in the air this week in the Gamma room, and April Fool’s Day was a lot of fun. Both Gamma math groups enjoyed outdoor learning this week in math, and our class garden is thriving! This quarter is off to a great start. Math Gamma ones figured out elapsed time using clocks and a number line strategy. They also started learning about perimeter. They applied it by measuring the perimeter of some of our playground areas in the AHB parking lot.  Gamma twos used their knowledge of lines and angles to design a robot with certain geometrical attributes.

2nd: Week of Mar 30

Math This week in math we reviewed quarters, learned a new version of the Macarena (“25, 50, 75, $1”) and did a lot of counting of mixed coins. These Betas are doing a fantastic job with this complicated task. We also held a couple of discussions about wants vs needs and saving vs spending. ELA In phonics this week, we continued our study of Bossy R, focusing on how it affects the vowel u! The spelling patterns we learned this week were: ur, ur_e, and ure. They all say /er/ but ure can also sometimes say /yer/, as in “cure”

Popsicle party!!! Thanks to the donors who helped us meet our Bowl-a-thon fundraising goal!! Where in the World?! This week, we sailed around our very own continent of North America, noting the landforms like islands and lakes, isthmuses and straits, and peninsulas and bays. We noticed that of the three largest countries in North America, the United States occupies most of the temperate zone. Peninsula…bay… We spent a lot of time north of the U.S.A., learning about the land the earliest people found there — like the biggest waterfalls, rainforests, bays…Here’s a link to some of the slides we looked at

It was a pleasure to have our Gammas return to class this week.  They enjoyed seeing  friends and sharing spring break experiences with each other.  We also eased right back into academics with some fun activities. This quarter is going to be so much fun! Math Gamma 1’s reviewed multiplication, division and problem solving by working on a math mystery.  We  also started off our measurement unit by practicing telling time on analog clocks.  Gamma 2’s reviewed fractions and dove right into geometry by learning the first of many vocabulary terms including point, line, plane, perpendicular, parallel and intersecting.
