Our BRAIN is “What’s Inside Me” AGAIN this week…
This week, we learned a lot about our neocortex!

Alphas learned that one of the memories that stays with us the longest – stored in our temporal lobes – is our sense of smell. We told stories about a memory triggered by a scent from our sniffer-work.

Alphas used their occipital lobes to sort objects by discrete attributes…and we used our frontal lobes to pay close attention to different tasks, like listening, or looking carefully!
Alphas used their parietal lobes to adjust their body movements to be successful with a task!

We painted the areas of our brain that we learned about this week too!
In Math…
Ms. Kim’s Mathletes…
Alphas learned that nature follows patterns like night and day.
We learned that the code for some types of patterns is named after letters. We made A/B patterns, AA/B patterns, A/BB patterns, and A/B/C patterns. Numbers follow a pattern, too. Every time we increase a quantity by 1, the symbol changes!

day, night, day, night…

Ms. Emma’s Math Wizards…
This week was all about tangrams! The students learned the history of the Chinese puzzle and the many different ways they are used to tell stories.

After much exploration using tangram guides, each student created their very own puzzle to record in their journal.

They were also challenged to solve a partner’s puzzle, which posed some difficulty….

Playing “Odd Todd and Even Steven”…
In ELA…
Ms. Kim’s group…
Read A Book with No Pictures, and talked about how animals communicate with sounds and how and why humans created a way to write our sounds down! We used mirrors to watch how our mouths produce sounds and listened with pipes to the sounds we make – some are voiced and some are not!
We started making our “Sounds and Letters” book, with the letters m, c, a, t!

Ms. Emma’s group…
This week began by reading a story which was familiar to many…Chysanthemum! We used the story to discuss who the main character is and how special our names are. The students also learned how to play a new game to test their letter knowledge – Dragon Race!

We wrapped up the week by making our own flowers where each petal holds a letter of our name.
In Other News…
We started the week by celebrating Ace’s birthday! Happy Birthday Ace, we hope your next trip around the sun is fantastic! Thank you for the delicious popsicles.
