Gammas packed a lot into our three day week, and we were excited to discover that we have several budding poets among us. We were grateful for the beautiful weather during recess and lunch. As the weather takes a turn this weekend, stay warm and safe!
Math
Gamma 1’s reviewed fractions less than or equal to one. They compared fractions with the same denominators (⅓ < ⅔) or the same numerators ( ⅓ > ⅛ ). They began comparing fractions with unlike denominators ( 4/6 > ¼). They are using tools like fractions bars, number lines and strip diagrams to help them. Gamma 2’s added and subtracted decimals and solved one and two step word problems related to adding/subtracting decimals. Both Gamma classes played math games to reinforce these concepts!
ELA
We learned that authors and poets use sensory language that appeals to our five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch). We read several poems and found many rich examples of this. We have begun putting together our own poetry anthologies! We learned how to write an acrostic poem and each Gamma has written their own! We are looking forward to creating more poetry!
THEME
We learned more about the geography of Asia and read about Qin Shi Huang who declared himself the first emperor in 221 BC at only 13 years old. He unified China from several fighting states to one by building roads and canals and making everyone use the same money and language. His workers began constructing the Great Wall of China to protect his country from invaders to the north. He was known for being very harsh, punishing those who spoke out against his ways. He died looking for a magic potion that would make him live forever. Next week, we will learn more about the tomb he built and the terracotta army! The Gammas completed several fun activities related to this including performing skits and doing a jigsaw activity for learning the information!
