2nd: Week of Jan 19

Math

In Math this week we wrapped up our time unit by learning about AM/PM and discussing the length of various daily activities. We also wrote out a sample schedule for a normal day AND conceived of a spectacular dream schedule for a most-perfect day! Always a favorite Beta activity :) On Thursday we launched our unit on measurement by learning about standard and nonstandard units of measurement, how to properly measure, and measuring several items in the classroom using nonstandard units.

ELA

Book Clubs are rolling right along! It is so heartening to see students independently reach for our class dictionary or to listen to them, deep in conversation about their stories and making personal connections to the text.

In Phonics this week we studied spellings of /k/ at the end of words: “k” after vowel teams or consonants, “ck” after short vowels and “ke” if the other rules don’t apply or if it comes after a long vowel sound (but no vowel team, such as with silent e words) Our sight words were: off, over, under and week.

During Writing we introduced fairytales! We learned the elements of a fairytale, read a version of Cinderella and The Painted Dragon, and dove right into our study of character traits. At the end of the week the Betas received their Fairytale Story Planners and began crafting their good and evil characters as well as developing their setting.

Theme

Back in the Medieval Times artisans would make woodblock prints as a type of signature for their work, or use the wood block print as the actual art. They would carve out a simple design in wood, ink it, and stamp it on paper and/or fabric. We wanted to give it a try! Each child designed a simple shape that fit with our theme on paper. When they were satisfied with the design, they “carved” it into a styrofoam piece to mimic a block of wood. Then we pressed it into the ink and we had ourselves a “woodblock” print!

Our artisan and craftsmen Peeps were very busy this week making their tiny goods to sell at the market! Swords, bread, wine glasses, clothing, tools, even armor!! We made simple pouches to hold our coin and tablecloths to don our stalls. Hear yee, hear yee! Market Day will be held on Monday.
