2nd: Week of Sept 8

The Betas keep chugging along! In math, we wrapped up our first unit on Number Sense and did an amazing job on the unit test! We had a well-deserved game day in between. Next up on the math agenda: Place Value! We’re starting off the year by focusing on fundamental concepts to set us up for future success. In phonics this week we reviewed beginning blends (gr, dr, br, tr, cr, pr, fr), 3 letter blends (scr, spl, str, spr, squ), and diagraph blends (shr, thr) We played Tic Tac Toe (5 in a row) by reading words with blends […]

A ferocious Dragon-Snowman-Robot! “What’s Inside Me” this week?…BONES! Alphas’ appreciation of their brains made them realize just how important it was to keep them safe and protected. Reeder even made a helmet for his Travel Buddy when he took it for a ride on his bike! We learned that our bodies come with some protection: bones. In our skeletal system, we have bones that protect and bones that provide structure. Protector bones are our “axial” bones because they are in line with the middle part of our body – like this axis the Earth spins on – Alphas pointed out

Heil og sæl (to your health and happiness) dear Gamma families! What a lot of learning we squeezed into this short week. Even as we’re learning about reading, math, writing, and the Vikings, the Gammas are gaining valuable knowledge about compromise and working in teams–from deciding who will read first during book club to pitching in to clean up our classroom after building Viking longhouses together–everyone is a valuable member of our little community! Math We used our knowledge of place value to help us round numbers. ELA We continued studying character traits, conflict, and reaction/resolution to conflict by reading

The Betas were very busy this week! In math, we practiced ordering large numbers – in the hundreds! We also spent a day reviewing tally marks and tallied almost the entire classroom! Finally, at the end of the week we tackled identifying patterns in a series of numbers, using the pattern to determine a skip count rule, and using the rule to continue the series of numbers. It’s tricky stuff but the Betas did great! In phonics this week we reviewed blends that begin with /s/ or contain /l/. We played two new games – one to boost fluency and

Our BRAIN is “What’s Inside Me” AGAIN this week… This week, we learned a lot about our neocortex! Alphas learned that one of the memories that stays with us the longest – stored in our temporal lobes – is our sense of smell. We told stories about a memory triggered by a scent from our sniffer-work. Alphas used their occipital lobes to sort objects by discrete attributes…and we used our frontal lobes to pay close attention to different tasks, like listening, or looking carefully! Alphas used their parietal lobes to adjust their body movements to be successful with a task!
