Thank you so much for your open feedback on our Parent Support Night survey. If you haven’t filled out it yet–please do ASAP! We’d really love to make your night with us super aligned with your needs and we can only do that well if you tell us what you’re thinking! It’s snappy–we promise!
Mark your calendars! Parent Support Night is next Tuesday evening, starting with a parent social at 5:30. With all the changes, we’d really appreciate your participation, if at all possible. Thanks!
Big welcome to Lia and family! We’re so excited to have you join our team.
Reading/Writing Update
It was a quick week in ELA but we made the most of it! On Tuesday we used answer keys and discussion to review our P&P. I’ve been very impressed with their ability to give themselves honest feedback and the amazing amount of effort they’ve put into their ELA P&P! They really hit the ground running and kept the pace! On Wednesday we spent some time wrapping up our menu projects. This was not a super in depth research project, but rather just meant to have us dip our toes gently back into the world of researching and writing for the new school year. After we finished, we did introduce our big research and writing project for the quarter this week: an informational essay on various topics related to ancient Korea. This week students were asked to percolate on topics that might interest them including the Goryeo dynasty’s government, achievements, and daily life, social hierarchy and daily life in Goryeo Korea, village life in 12th-Century Korea including communities, food, clothing, and shelter, celadon pottery and Korean art, and Buddhism and religion in the Goryeo dynasty. This week we simply looked at the elements of an informational essay and started exploring the different topics. Next week we will choose a topic, do more research, and start plugging information into a graphic organizer to create paragraphs and then, before you know it, a 5 paragraph essay!
Math Update
We got much accomplished during our short week in math class. Year 1 students started the week with a place value scavenger hunt. They worked in small groups to complete challenging decimal-related problems (tough!) and then followed cryptic clues to find “missing people” hiding around the school (little printed medallions of famous people, characters and even a few Deltas!) It was so much fun! When lesson planning for the week, I felt bad that Year 1 kids would get this kind of fun so I created a similar activity for Year 2 kids giving them practice naming, ordering and adding/subtracting integers. They ate it up! It was so much fun! As the week continued, Year 1 kids moved into addition/subtration practice with decimals. Year 2 kiddos used bingo blotters to create “positive and negative” battles to “show” how we add and subtract when negative numbers are in the mix. Next week, we may be able to move on to multiplication and division with negative numbers!
Theme Update
We boarded a plane for South America this week in theme! We started the week with an escape room that gave students a chance to read about different aspects of South American culture and history. The next day we explored the compass rose and gave students a “buffet” of information packets about twelve countries of South America. They headed to the map, selected a country of interest in each direction (north, south, east and west) and then hunted for their most interesting facts they learned about the country. Next, we filled out a related graphic organizer so kids could prepare for a craft activity at week’s end. We used popsicle sticks and yarn (and some funky Cricut cut outs invented by Lorrraine McGyver! haha!) to make these really nifty hanging art pieces that gave kids the opportunity to both explore specific countries in more detail and also practice their mapping skills. Next week, we head to Europe!
P.S. During FLEX time this week, we did a fun communication team-building challenge so you’ll see some funny pictures below featuring Delta/Epsilon together from that activity.
