7th/8th: Week of Dec 8

We survived “Flumageddon” this week, with an average of 50% of our Epsilon students in attendance throughout the week. We appreciate those who stayed home to limit the spread of the illness, and we even managed to get a little learning done!

Math:

This week the 7th graders covered non-proportional relationships and studied for their check-in next week. The 8th graders worked on reviewing angle relationships with parallel and transversal lines. Towards the end of the week they completed an art project to help them identify angle relationships. The Algebra students completed an escape room to review the entire semester. Their midterm is next week.

Humanities:

Finishing off the quarter saw Humanities students summarizing and applying their skills in analyzing shorts stories through analytical paragraphs. They chose two short stories and looked for common themes, plot twists, or climaxes. They took those similarities and built paragraphs around them. They created a visual presentation for their analysis in one page artworks featuring symbols and quotes from the stories.

Theme:

With our numbers in limited supply, students concentrated on extension activities that focused on Genetics. Last week, we created our first generation of alien babies based on the inherited characteristics defined by chance. This week, two members of the first generation created a 2nd, by practicing creating punnet squares and again using chance, determined with traits would be passed on. Students then modeled the 2nd generation using air clay. The results, as usual, were creating and insightful. We can’t wait for everyone to see the results!

In passing this week, it was great to hear students taling and using the vocabulary related to genetics. They really learned a lot about the topic.

Our project presentation date has changed from Monday, Dec. 15, to Tuesday, Dec. 16th. To accommodate those who were absent. The final drafts of the Specialized Cell Information Essays are also due on the date.
