Gammas had a super week! Our tadpoles are growing fast and showing the first signs of legs. One of our caterpillars emerged from its cocoon and on Thursday, we set it free! Observing and learning about nature firsthand in our classroom has been extremely exciting. We are looking forward to our field trip to the LadyBird Johnson Wildflower Center next Thursday!
Math
Gamma 2’s polished up their long division skills. We focused on remainders and what they represent in real life problems. Sometimes we can ignore the remainder, and other times the remainder calls for adding one more to the quotient. Gamma 1’s learned to determine the operations needed to solve word problems by focusing on key words and whether answers are reasonable. We also learned about multiplying by multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. Watch for practice on these skills in next week’s P&P.
ELA
We finished writing and illustrating our fables. In reading we learned that an inference is something believed to be true based on clues and evidence. Using their keen observation skills, Gammas made inferences from photographs as well as short texts and backed them up with evidence.
THEME
This week we reviewed primary, secondary and tertiary consumers by looking at a food web with a barn owl as the apex predator. We dissected owl pellets and learned about the owl’s diet by identifying bones inside the pellet. Rats, voles and small birds seem to be their food of choice. We finished the week by learning about animals’ physical and behavioral adaptations for survival.

Winter is here!
We must conserve resources and hunker down to ensure our survival!
Therefore, we declare Hibernation Day on Tuesday, December 9.
Gammas are invited (and encouraged!) to wear pajamas and bring one stuffy to school with them on this special day.

Twiggy will be bringing hot chocolate to reward Gammas for earning 100 tickets!
