2nd: Week of Oct 20

We kicked off our Addition & Subtraction Unit by learning about (and using snap cubes to create models of) fact families! We reviewed the commutative property of addition – it does not matter which addend comes first. We then used our sum to create matching subtraction sentences within the same fact family. On Thursday we worked so hard flipping addition problems to create groups of ten. 10 is such a friendly number to work with that once we formed a group of ten, adding the leftovers to it is easy peasy.

In phonics this week we studied possessives. We learned that they may look like contractions because they both use apostrophes, however possessives show ownership. We practiced rewriting several sentences with possessives and did our weekly dictation on whiteboards.

This week we learned about compound words and compound sentences! We learned the conjunctions: because, but and so and practiced using them to create some REALLY creative sentences!

Before delving into Simple Machines we need to understand a few important concepts. This week we explored force (including balanced and unbalanced) and motion. First we learned that a force is an action that changes or maintains the motion of a body or object. Simply stated, a force is a push or a pull. Motion is when an object moves from one place to another by a force. The best way to understand force and motion is to give it a try! We had two labs – The Puff Cup Lab, where we blew various cups and measured the distance, recording how far they moved, what force made them move and why some moved farther than others. The second lab, Still or Moving?, showed us that when an object is still, it does not move from one place to another. When an object is moving, it starts in one place and ends in another. Additionally, we practiced measuring the distance that objects moved. Next week we will incorporate stopwatches to determine speed.
