4th/5th: Week of Mar 25

General News Reading/Writing Update This week in Gammaland we introduced our new novel Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by Tọlá Okogwu. On Tuesday we started the week off with an introduction to the book by Tọlá Okogwu herself and read the author’s note to learn more about why she decided to write this book. We then read chapter 1 together as a class and had a discussion about the two main characters we know so far: Onyeka and Cheyenne. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group talked about fractions & how we can divide plane shapes equally. We’re getting great at writing them, remembering that the bigger number always goes on the bottom. Ms. Kelly’s math group dove into the concept of area. We learned that area is the amount of space within a 2D shape. It is measured in square units, such as cm², m², etc. We practiced finding the area of a rectangle two ways- by tiling and by multiplying the length and the width. We also brought out the tiles to create some area models before jumping

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group practiced sorting congruent and similar shapes. Then we dove into solid shapes and examined faces, vertices and edges. We also did a 3D shape mix and mingle to form groups and practiced counting solid shape attributes. The kids learned how to play 5 In A Row and it’s all about STRATEGY! And a little luck. We closed the week by finishing up some geometry work and practicing identifying 2D and 3D shapes. Ms. Kelly’s math group began a new unit on area and perimeter. This week is all about reviewing some basic geometry- What

General News Reading/Writing Update In ELA this week we continued to plug away at our opinion writing. On Monday we spent time brainstorming a list of things we have strong opinions about. We discussed that your writing will be better and more fun if you pick something you’re genuinely interested and passionate about! Some Gammas picked topics they already know a lot about and some picked topics they will need to spend a little time researching to learn more about. On Tuesday we started writing an introductory paragraph. This introductory paragraph is deceptively tricky! It contains a brief hook for

Larry Alert! Larry Alert!!! Our leprechaun has returned with more mischief! It is looking more and more like we are going to have to build some traps again this year. Please bring in any 3D recyclables to help us in this math project! In the past we have appreciated receiving any cubes, rectangular or triangular prisms, cones, and cylinders (oatmeal boxes are AWESOME). 2024 could be our year! Larry mixed up our supply bins this week! Our intrepid early birds put things back where they belong! This week in the Ocean… Alphas know that the food chain and webs in
