Afternoon Community Classes (ACC)

Extra-Curricular

With a part-time school schedule, many of our students pursue extra-curricular interests in the evenings or on off-days. Some of our students are involved with club sports, instrumental music, scouting, etc.

Though we do not offer separate art, music, or P.E. classes during our school day, we incorporate artistic and kinesthetic activities into other activities within our classrooms. In addition, AHB's Afternoon Community Classes are available (for an additional fee) to our students from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The classes offered are based on parent request, but generally consist of art, PE, community outreach, and more! See a few of our Community Class listings below for details on what AHB students have enjoyed this school year.

First Quarter: Sep 7-Oct 14 2:30-3:30pm

Tuesdays: Stories

In this art class, we will explore the world of stories. In each session, we will focus on a different piece of children's literature followed by exploration of the work's themes and translating our own meaning and personal interpretations into mixed-media creations: using sculpture, painting, collage, and more!

Wednesdays: Musical Creations

For thousands of years, people around the world have expressed themselves through creating and sharing music. In this class, not only will we be building our own musical instruments and learning how these and other instruments make different sounds, we'll also experiment with how human emotions and themes can be expressed through music-making. We hope to record or perform the music we make at the end of the class, to share with others.

Thursdays: Language

In this class, by using our bodies, our voices, and artistic media, we will learn about the many, many ways we communicate, and explore human language acquisition. We will also explore cognates, roots, and other connections between different languages as we learn basic words and phrases. We hope we will see students use their new knowledge to create a new language all their own!

Second Quarter: Oct 26-Dec 16 2:30-3:30pm

Tuesdays:  Landscapes

This is an art class in which we will focus on different ecosystems and environments - both familiar and unfamiliar - and their landscapes. We will explore various artists' expressions of their surroundings and the kids will create mixed-media art pieces based on landscapes that they choose to represent.

Wednesdays: Fun with Fibers

This will be an all-hands-on class where we have fun with paper-making! We'll create seed cards to send to people in our community for planting, and get creative with stamping, printing, and painting and experimenting with various kinds of papers. We will create and sell fantastic hand-made gift wrapping paper at AHB's annual Winter Fair at the close of the 2nd Quarter.

Thursdays: Stories & Snacks

Each week in Stories & Snacks, the kids will learn to prepare a simple and deliciously-nutritious snack that they can easily make at home. While the snacking is happening, we will read a great book aloud.

Third Quarter: January 4-March 3 2:30-3:30pm

Tuesdays: Animal Art

This is an art class where we will explore diversity and biology of the animal world as well as classical animal symbolism in art and literature. We will be reading and learning about animals and looking at representations of animals in artists' work. We will present a multitude of animal-themed art projects that celebrate and express the science and spirit of the animal world.

Wednesdays: Photography

In this class, we will learn the very basic compositional and story-telling elements of photography and photojournalism. How can we tell the story of the world around us using only pictures?  Each student will be given disposable cameras for trying out the compositional techniques we learn about, and will be given weekly photo assignments. At the end of quarter, we will have a photography show.

Thursdays: Game Boards

"I wish everyday was game board making" is what was heard last year over and over - what more do I need to say about that! In this class we will have tons of supplies and each child will create a unique game board to take home. All AHB students will be studying habitats during this quarter in their classrooms, so the goal will be to create a game that goes along with this theme.

Fourth Quarter: March 22 -May 13 2:30-3:30pm

Tuesdays: Myths

In this art class we will study mythology from around the world and create artistic representations mythological themes and characters. We will see how some stories have been told for thousands of years and are evolving constantly. The art we create will show our own take on these myths as we explore new mythological worlds through literature.

Wednesdays: Video Class

To tie into our school-wide theme of World History, this video production class will allow the kids to create a short film, music video, or stop animation movie about an important historical event (to still be determined.) We will learn how to storyboard, plan, art-direct, act, shoot, and do basic editing with iMovie in this class. Everyone will have a role in creating our short film, which will be shown at a special screening at the end of the school year.

Thursdays: Stories & Snacks

Each week in Stories & Snacks, the kids will learn to prepare a simple and deliciously-nutritious snack that they can easily make at home. While the snacking is happening, we will read a great book aloud.
