Board of Directors

Bob Bednar, President

Bob brings over 10 years of experience in higher education administration to his work on the Board at AHB.  He is currently a college professor and Chair of the Communication Studies Department at Southwestern University in Georgetown, where he has taught media studies and visual culture studies since 1999.  He holds an MA and PhD in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and a BA in American Studies from Southwestern.  Bob has served on the Board for three years and has been Board Chair for the last two.  He is also currently Chair of the Executive-Finance Committee and Chair of the Strategic Planning WorkGroup.  Bob and his partner Danielle Hayes have two children at AHB: Anika, who is entering Gamma this year, and Lukas, who is entering Beta this year.  Their family has been a part of the AHB community since 2005.

Chris Johnson, Treasurer

Chris Johnson joined the AHBCS school board in 2007 and will enter his third year as board treasurer this fall (2011). Chris graduated from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1995 and currently owns and manages MedSavers Pharmacy here in Austin.  He brings over a decade of business experience to AHB and he and his wife, Bryna, have two sons (Kien and Cohen) attending AHB.

Geoff Mueller, Member

Driven by a passion to get their children a top-notch education, the Muellers joined AHB in 2008.  The next year, Geoff Mueller joined the Board of AHB in order to be more involved with the school's evolution.  Geoff has an undergrad degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin and made it halfway through his teaching certificate before realizing he didn't quite have what it takes to be a teacher (namely, patience with small children).  Later in his career, Geoff achieved his MBA with honors from Webster University, a far cry from his undergraduate work which could optimistically be labeled "embarrassing."  Geoff's career has spanned the financial services industry to IT security to his current project, starting a mutual fund.

Johnna Shell, Secretary

Originally from California, Johnna relocated to Austin in 1997 to attend the UT School of Social Work but was offered other wonderful opportunities instead.  Johnna worked for several years as the Program Coordinator of the Internal Medicine and Family Practice Education Programs at Seton.  During this time, she also volunteered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area coordinating fundraising efforts and recruiting and training staff.  Johnna has been a member of the Board of Directors with both Austin Medical Education Programs and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area.  She understands that it is within these meetings that the transformation from vision to reality occurs.

For the past two years, Johnna has served as the Board Secretary of AHB Community School as well as the Chair of the Marketing and Community Relations sub-committees.  She also serves as the Parent Liaison, working to foster better communication within the AHB community.  Johnna has two children who love to call AHB their school home.

Kirsten Coleman, Teacher Representative

Kirsten is currently the AHB Math Coordinator and Gamma co-teacher.  She has taught at AHB for 4 years as Math Coordinator and co-teacher in the Beta, Gamma and Delta classes.   She has also coached Math Pentathlon and Math Olympiad teams since 2001.  She also started and ran a small private middle school for one year.  Prior to teaching, Kirsten worked in the high-tech corporate arena since the late 1980s.  In that world she held various technical, educational, consulting and management positions and enjoyed them all.  Kirsten is a graduate of Earlham College, a small liberal arts Quaker School in Richmond, Indiana where she majored in Sociology and Anthropology and spent a semester and summer in Spain.   Kirsten has also enjoyed volunteering as a Big Sister, at Heifer International, and for various animal rescue league outreach programs to the elderly.   She has two children who have attended AHB and AISD schools.
