AHB is proud of its HEART

  • 5.5 hours per day
  • 3-4 days per week (homework totals 1 to 6 hours per 7-day week,
    depending on classroom)
  • After-School Programs available until 3:30 - Camps too!  www.ahbcommunityclasses.org

Educational Philosophy

  • hands-on, meaningful, &/or project-based instruction in reading, writing, science, social studies/history, and mathematics
  • mixed-aged classes with mixed-ability grouping for project work
  • ability grouping* (within each class) for specific skill instruction in math and reading*NOTE: Though we ability group within mixed-age classes, we are not able to provide a separate curriculum for a single student. Therefore, AHB is generally not the best fit for profoundly gifted students or students with other significant learning differences.

Atmosphere

  • not just a school; a community (a "home away from home")
  • involved families (20+ hours of volunteer work per family/per year)
  • parents and siblings always welcome to drop in
  • emphasis on respect, responsibility, creativity,
    generosity, and teamwork
  • secular

Ratios

  • low student:teacher ratios - 9:1
  • generally classes of 18 students (with 2 teachers)

Teachers

  • think and teach outside the box, collaborating with co-teachers to create lessons based on academic objectives, thematic units/projects, real-world relevance, and the interests and learning styles of the students in their classes
  • are warm, passionate, and dedicated; they actually enjoy their jobs!
  • enjoy the company and creativity of children, and value their wit and wisdom
